Students will create a beautiful box with curved sides using the bandsaw and router table, pin-hinge top with inlay strips including a sectioned jewelry tray. You'll learn to make cove cuts using the table saw to add curvature to the bottom and sides of the box. Finally, you'll learn to add a suede lining insert to the inside bottom. This is an approximate 30 hour class building on the skills that you have learned in Box 101 and 201.

Kids Workshop - Chalk Box

Saturday, April 26, 2 PM - 4 PM

This is a one day workshop designed to give children between the ages of 8 - 11 years, a beginning foundation in woodworking techniques. Students will be predominantly using hand tools for safe construction with the exception of the battery powered hand drills and both manual and plug-in random orbital Festool sanders to make a variety of creative games. All power tool preparation of materials will be done outside of class time to ensure safety of students. Tools used in class include: hammer, drill, screwdriver, pull and coping saws, ruler, tape measure, pliers, clamps, smoothing plane, sandpaper. One parent is expected to stay with their child throughout the class.

Turning a Bowl with an Inlay Rim using Carbide-Tipped Tools

Learn what it takes to create a beautiful wooden bowl with a colored crystal inlay on the bowl rim from a 4 x 2 x2 turning block, using carbide-tipped tools. Topics not only cover basic lathe operation using carbide-tipped tools, but also include sectioning, face plate mounting, shaping, hollowing, inlay design, sanding and finishing . You MUST have completed Introduction to the Lathe or a Pen class before this class.

Cutting Boards and Coasters

This is a two night class to learn how make an 9" x 11" cutting board and matching 4" x 4" coasters using assorted hard woods, i.e. maple, cherry, walnut or purpleheart. Students will learn to mill rough wood, design their cutting board and coasters, glue up and clamp the design on the first evening. The second session will include jointing, planing, sanding and finishing the projects.

Finishing 101 with Raw Wood

Have you had questions about the proper method of sanding a raw piece of wood for staining or finishing? This class should answer all of your questions and instruct you in the proper sanding techniques & methods, how to fill cracks in wood, differences between water-based and oil-based stains and different finishing products and methods. This class will be taught by a finishing professional and he will discuss the pros and cons of different finishing and staining products, while you learn hands-on how to prepare maple and oak wood samples for staining and finishing. Session 1 - will focus on preparing the wood and staining. Session 2 - will focus on top coats and applying finishes.

This class is a fun and exciting request from many of our customers and students. In your class, we will cover the full step-by-step process of creating a resin art piece. At the end of the class, you will leave with a fully finished 10" x 18" resin and wood art board. In constructing your board, you will learn how to select and prepare your live edge materials, how to construct and prepare a pouring mold, how to properly calculate, mix and pour Ecopoxy Liquid Plastic 2:1, how to mix colors using dyes and pigments, how to de-mold your artwork once cured and the proper techniques for milling, sanding and finishing your piece.

Hand Tool Sharpening

In this class, we will cover sharpening and tuning techniques to bring the most out of your chisel, hand plane and scraper. We will discuss the best use of each tool and the best way to put and keep an edge on your tools. The class will cover sharpening, tuning, and hand tool selection while using water stones, honing guides and strops. If you have any bench chisels, hand planes, and scrapers that need to be sharpened, please bring them in for class. If not, we have plenty at the shop to practice on. The course also covers subjects such as wood technology, selecting and purchasing lumber, sharpening techniques and finishing. All tools and materials provided. Fan Carving - Birds

Fan Carving is a very old carving technique where you make birds that have wings and a tail that fan out from the body from a single block of wood. You will use prepared blanks to make practice fans as well as a simple bird, while learning to lay out the interlock and hinge, rive the feather, carve the bird profile, and fan the wings and tail. You will have your choice of two fan bird patterns, a turkey or a chickadee. You will also learn how to prepare your own blanks for future fan caving. The class cost includes 2 blanks for making fan carved birds. Please supply your own carving knife and safety equipment (protective carving glove). You can also purchase the carving detail knife and safety glove at the reduced price of $40. The class is being taught by John L, a member of the Montgomery County Carvers.
