Soft Maple (Acer rubrum) is about 25% softer than hard maples. The sapwood is indistinguishable from the heartwood, which is creamy white in color with a close, straight grain. It works well with hand machine tools and can be stained and polished to an excellent finish. Common uses for soft maple include furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors, musical instruments, turnings and millwork.
