Woodworking Fundamentals I

Part 1: Thursday, January 9, 5:30 PM - 9 PM

Part 2: Friday, January 10, 5:30 PM - 9 PM

This class is designed for beginners who want to learn how to safely use the core tools of the wood shop. During the first half of the class, we will focus on how to properly flatten and size lumber using the table saw, jointer, and planer. Once the material is flat and square, we will discuss glue up methods as we join the material to create a cutting board. The second half of the class will focus on safely using the router and router table to shape the board and apply a decorative edge. Students will leave with a completed project and a great foundation for starting their woodworking journey!

Woodworking Fundamentals II

Part 1: Saturday, January 11, 9 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, January 12, 9 AM - 5 PM

In the second part of our Woodworking Fundamentals series, students will receive hands-on practice with generating a cut-list, processing lumber, laying out and creating joinery, cutting tapered legs, and assembling tables. Along with developing the foundational skills learned in Fundamentals I, the main focus of this class is on discussing pros and cons of several joinery methods, including pocket screws, dowels, dominos, and Mortise and Tenons. Students will be able to apply at least one of these methods to their Shaker End Table projects, and will leave with a better understanding of woodworking joinery and furniture construction techniques. PRE-REQUISITE: Woodworking Fundamentals I OR Table Saw/Jointer/Planer.

Prepping for the Perfect Finish

Tuesday, January 14, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Ending with the perfect finish on a great project takes thought, planning and careful consideration. Your experience with different tools will most likely also decide the finish you choose and the steps to prepare for the application of the finish. In this class the instructor will cover some of the common finishes, the options for preparing the wood to best accept the finish and alternative preparation paths to assure you hit the mark for your project. At the end of the class, you’ll be able to layout your finishing project starting with preparation based on the finish type, and plan each and every step you will need to complete a beautiful project your friends will envy. (Optional class tools apron, and card scrapers)
