This class is an extension of Hand Tool Mastery I, where we continue to expand and hone our skill set with hand tools. We will continue to work on "lap" joinery (corner-lap and t-lap), while we introduce bridle joinery and the ever-versatile mortise and tenon. We will also introduce hand tool shaping in our class project. Each student will be putting these skills to use with the construction of a versatile foot stool, designed with artfully exposed joinery. All of the joinery, techniques, and construction theory in this class are transferable to many other furniture pieces, such as tables, stands, cases, and much more. Project completion and an applied finish will require independent work after class has concluded, when students are encouraged to continue practicing their learned skills leading up to Hand Tool Mastery III: The Dovetail Toolbox.
This is a basic instructional class directed at one of the most useful tools in the entire shop: the bandsaw! Students will learn basic bandsaw safety and operation including rip cutting, cross cutting, re-sawing, and compound cutting. Step by step, we will walk you through essential personal safety as well as care and control of the saw, bandsaw setup, anatomy, blade selection and proper installation, calibration, re-saw drift, and how to get the most out of this valuable tool. During the morning and afternoon sessions, as we discuss these important bandsaw fundamentals, we will put new skills to use with cross cutting, rip cutting, re-sawing, and a bonus mock-up project involving pattern work!
