Come join in learning the basics of Vectrics V-Carve software. Learn how to create a CNC job. Using basic shapes and basic text. We will learn to create basic toolpaths, and how to save for machining. We will create an easy to carve sign, and you can carve here at the end of class or if you own your own machine carve it at home. NOTE: Those who have the free demo installed will not be able to output their design to have it carved. We will if time permitted be able to recreate in our version and output to the machine.

Resin and Burl Turning Blank Casting

Tuesday, September 17, 5 PM - 7 PM

In this class we’ll be discussing using casting resin and burl to make one of a kind handle blanks for your turning projects. Each student will use a 4” x 6” x 2” HDPE mold to make two turning blanks the perfect size for handles of bottle openers, ice cream scoops, etc. You’ll pick your colors with a wide variety of dyes and powders and Keith will show you how to mix them and use the pressure pot to make sure your blanks are bubble-free. Then, they’ll stay under pressure overnight and you can pick up your two ready-to-turn handle blanks the next day! Whether for an ice cream scoop, bottle opener, or pizza cutter, you’ll have something that will last and is sure to be a conversation piece when you break it out at your next get-together. Your $75 tuition covers all materials provided.

We’ll talk slab selection, flattening techniques, styles, cool features you can add, all the things about which resins to choose for your specific idea, and how to sand and refinish when the time comes after years of heavy use. Come in with your questions and we’ll give you the confidence needed to try this unique and super fun project!

Dimension a Board Using a Jack Plane

Learn how to setup a jack Plane to take shavings from a board as you first level, then flatten a piece of timber. 1. Learn basic blade adjustments for best cut. 2. Learn the use of the lateral adjustment to make blade parallel to the sole of the plane. 3.Learn proper body mechanics for using the bench plane. You will learn basic plane setup, and the basic skills to first level then look for and remove twist from a board. We will cover the tools and steps for the next process that would flatten and dimension the board.

Using only three different woods – maple, cherry, and walnut – Alex will show each student how to make a 3D Stair Step Cutting Board that will really impress your family and friends. During the class, Alex will answer all of your questions about bandsaws, while covering basic topics such as bandsaw mechanics, tuning a bandsaw, and making perfect straight or angled cuts. Alex will also cover topics including glue-up techniques, how to plane and will debunk some common bandsaw myths. By the end of the class, each student will have a fantastic 3D Stair Step Cutting Board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. From the beginner to the advanced woodworker, every student will leave the class with a 3D Stair Step Cutting Board and a smile on their face.
