CLS1075 - With more than 64 species of wood in Ohio, woodworkers have a great opportunity to salvage and use wood from local blown down and dead trees. Join tree farmer Randy Sanders to learn how he turns blowdown and dead trees into slabs, flitches, picture frames, benches and other one of a kind products. Using a power point presentation and wood examples, Randy will discuss the process and show what equipment is needed to log, mill and dry the wood and work with slabs and flitches. Learn how to have a log milled to produce flat sawn, quarter sawn and book matched flitches, or edged lumber. Also learn about the unique and beautiful wood from native and rarely used trees like redbud, black locust, persimmon and sassafras and how to find a sawmill. Benefits from salvaging wood from local dead trees include - lower costs, controlling if chemicals are used in the process, specialized cuts, and beautiful one-of-a-kind final products. The class will consist of approximately 3 hours of slides and 1 hour of Randy talking and showing how he makes products out of the slabs and flitches.
CLS1226 - In this class you, and instructor Nickolas Knue, will be making a simple cutting board with an accented end! We will be taking strips of wood and making them into an 11”x14” cutting board you can show off or give as a gift. The tools used will be a table saw, planer, and drum sander. This class is open to couples of any walk of life and parent child duos! Children 10 and up are welcome but only children 16 and up will be able to use the table saw due to safety reasons. We look forward to having you in this class here at Woodcraft Columbus!
CLS1100 - In this class, expert knifemaker, Brad Hunt, will guide you, step by step, through the process of making a knife from a kit and scales that you’ll purchase at the store prior to the class (students receive 10% off for class materials!). You’ll leave the class with a knife you’ve made yourself, and the knowledge to make more in the future; once you’ve made a knife, you’ll surely want to make more! We have a wide range of knife kits and scales at the store; to help you choose, check out Brad’s website, where he explains the process and difficulty of various types of kits: www.bradfordhuntdesign.com. Brad will also have a selection of his own unique and stunning knife scales available for purchase at the class.

Chip Carving, which was started in Germany, is a style of carving in which knives or chisels are used to remove small chips of the material from a flat surface in a single piece. Chris Zaenger will show you the various cuts and demo how they are done while you complete the two projects shown in the picture. You will need to purchase a chip carving knife similar to Item # 187173 Chip Carving Knife Set for $29.99 at a 10% discount or Item # 05Z21 #2 Chip Carving Knife for $24.99 at a 10% discount. Please purchase one or the other at least a week prior to the class so you can be assured of its availability.
CLS1099 - Ohio woodworkers, builders and others are fortunate to live in a state with such an abundance and diversity of tree species. Join tree farmer, sawyer and woodworker Randy Sanders to learn more about Ohio's hardwoods and softwoods. He has logged, milled, dried and worked with more than 35 species during the past 12 years. Using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and wood samples, he will discuss the basic properties, structures and uses of these woods. More than 30 species of Ohio wood will be viewed and discussed. Randy will show the different ways lumber and flitches are cut from logs as well as common defects and anomalies such as spalting, burls and black knot disease. Students will gain a better understanding of common wood terms including grain (straight, spiral, edge, top, end), figure, ray flecking, ring-porous, and others that will help you begin the process of wood identification and better understand what you see looking at wood. All will leave with two wood samples (one each of ring-porous and diffuse porous).

We are excited to announce we have made the decision on expanding our class schedule to include a BUILD FROM SCRATCH ACOUSTIC GUITAR CLASS under the tutelage of our Master Luthier, Passang Bhote, pictured above. This is not a kit guitar! Over the next few weeks he will be making a display guitar, that can also be played, with a see thru back so you can view what goes into making one. A Dreadnought Guitar with a bolt on neck will be the type of guitar made during the class and no, that is not an acoustic guitar in the picture!
Classes around us, to do this type of instruction, typically range from $3,950 all the way to $7,500 plus the cost of wood. While this is a class to make a guitar, it shouldn't be construed as a Luthier learning type of class and as such, the cost will be lower. However, this is NOT a beginning woodworker type of class so please have some experience with hand and power tools and you are going to do the work to build your guitar. The finish will need to be applied at home.
You will be building a guitar from wood species you choose, with Passang's help and advice. The wood cost will be extra and based upon what you choose, as some woods are more expensive than others. You will work with Passang to decide those wood species prior to the class. The class will run 9 AM to 5 PM each day for seven (7) days. The cost to take the class for will be $2,500 plus the cost of the wood you choose. We hope this class in the future will run every three months. It is limited to two students!
Stop in and talk to Passang Bhote who is usually here most weekdays and ask any questions you may have. A deposit of $1,250 will be required at the sign-up for the class. Remember, you really need to be, at a minimum, an intermediate woodworker with both hand and power tool experience. The class is not in the system yet, but hopefully by Monday to allow your sign-up. Anyone who has taken a class from Passang will echo my praise for him as an instructor.

Woodcraft of Columbus invites woodworkers to expand their bandsaw skills with an exciting new class from nationally recognized expert Alex Snodgrass, who returns to Woodcraft stores nationwide in 2024. The highly popular Bandsaw Method Tour embarks on its second year on January 5 and 6 in Clearwater, FL and finishes at Woodcraft of Columbus, Nov 23rd and 24th.
“In mid-2022, Woodcraft started discussing ways to provide our customers with an education-based experience on bandsaws and bandsaw projects, and when it comes to bandsaw optimization and design, there is only one person who came to mind – Alex Snodgrass,” said Andrew Bondi, Woodcraft Vice President of Retail and Franchise Operations. “With help from our partners at JET-Powermatic, Woodcraft was able to broker a nationwide tour featuring Alex. Throughout 2023, Alex has been delighting our customers from coast to coast, and we couldn’t be happier to have him on board for another tour in 2024. Alex is a fantastic teacher – he really shows off how the bandsaw is a versatile tool that can create dazzling projects.”
In 2023, Snodgrass visited 72 Woodcraft stores to teach his unique 3D end-grain cutting board and present seminars on keeping a bandsaw running at optimum performance level.
The 2024 class focuses on a stair-step patterned cutting board, along with Art of Bandsaw Boxes seminars the night before. Sign up for the Columbus Woodcraft Seminar and the cutting board class are available now by calling 614-273-0488.
The night before the cutting board class during this seminar, Alex will show you how to set up your bandsaw correctly and demonstrate how he makes some really cool Boxes using the bandsaw and, I am sure, we will get a few Reindeer cut in less than a minute! Students will get hands-on instruction during the cutting board class from Snodgrass, who has demonstrated at woodworking shows for many years. He has also taught numerous woodworking classes at Woodcraft stores and the Marc Adams School of Woodworking, among others.
Snodgrass was born and raised in Miami, later lived in Georgia, and has lived in Virginia for the past seven years. After spending time in the Navy, he lived in Hawaii, where he had a job delivering items for a woodworking store. It was there that he found his passion for tools. The store owners also found out that he was excellent at presenting and selling tools. This generated longstanding relationships with both Carter Products (since 1994) and JET/Powermatic (since 1999).
Snodgrass became adept at the bandsaw, and began to find better ways to maximize its performance. He holds several patents, including the bandsaw stabilizer, quick release, electronic tension gauge and others. He also has several inventions that have not been patented.
To learn more about Snodgrass and everything about Bandsaws, visit Bandsaw Life on YouTube.
CLS 1157 - This is a great opportunity to make a cutting board with the master himself: Alex Snodgrass. Using only three different woods – maple, cherry, and walnut – Alex will show each student how to make a stunning stair-step patterned cutting board. He will begin by teaching each student how to tune a bandsaw to make perfect cuts. Students will then progress through techniques required to build a cutting board: how to make dead-on straight cuts and accurate angled cuts on the bandsaw, and how to plane, sand, glue, and clamp the cutting board. Topics to be covered include: bandsaw myths debunked, bandsaw mechanics, correct blade tension, accurate angle cuts, gluing techniques, end-grain planing, end-grain pattern alignment, food-safe finishes, and care and maintenance of cutting boards.
By the end of the day, each student will have a fantastic cutting board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. From the beginner to the advanced woodworker, every student will leave the class with a cool cutting board and a smile on their face. Register today – only 10 seats available!

CLS1143 - This is a great opportunity to make a Tele-Type Guitar for yourself or give the class as a gift for someone that loves to play guitars! This class is designed to accommodate the beginner/intermediate woodworker in building their own electric guitar learning basic woodworking techniques in the process. The process will be broken down in bite sized tasks that enable the student to get a clear understanding of the various steps in making an electric guitar. This is not a kit guitar! You are building it from scratch! You will learn how to make a body, hand carve a neck, install a truss rod and install the fret board after you install frets and slot a nut. Finally, you will learn how to wire it up (CTS Pots and Switchcraft Output Jack) and to properly setup a guitar to play perfectly for you. Each guitar will be completed before leaving the class, however, painting/finishing the guitar will be left to the student to complete after the class at home. Finishing techniques will be discussed to provide guidance and Ed will be available to answer questions after the class. Ed is a professional guitar maker, with vast experience making both acoustic and electric guitars. Sign up and make your own guitar!
