Basic Turning

Part 1: Monday, July 7, 6 PM - 10 PM

HANDS-ON. Howard Hale will teach this dynamic and fundamental, "3-session", class for all beginning turners. Session #1: Spindle Turning. This class is geared to help you get started on the lathe. Tool selection, handling, safety and machine basics will be covered. You will learn how to make cuts to produce beads, coves and other basic spindle shapes. Session #2: Bowl Turning/Face Grain. Perfect your basic skills by learning to turn a wooden bowl. Face plate turning, tool selection, techniques, sanding and finishing will be covered. Session #3: Bowl Turning/End- Grain. Learn to turn another style of bowl by it's end-grain. End-grain bowls are very different than face-grain bowls and will allow you to expand your turning skills. Michael Boyle will provide hands-on teaching as each student turns a small "coke-can" size box with a fitted lid. You will learn how to cut the lid off the main bowl body and then cut a lip on the lid, just right so, it "SNAPS" into place. Build An End-Grain Cutting Board

HANDS-ON. We have a GREAT KITCHEN CLASS from Doug Jones. Students will build, over the three nights, an End-Grain style Cutting Board from two contrasting types of wood. This 12" X 18" Cutting Board will be constructed from "End-Grain", not the Long-Grain of the boards. This traditional method of building a Cutting Board makes it VERY DURABLE. It will takes cuts from a knife and not show any damage for many years to come. Doug is a great woodworker and his hands-on approach to teaching will help you learn all the tricks for End-Grain cutting and glue-up. Students will learn how to mount a bowl blank to the lathe using several different methods and which tools to use and how to use them to make clean efficient cuts. Build A Spline Corner Keepsake Box

HANDS-ON. Mark Seay has come up with a great Table Saw Box Class. Mark is a wonderful teacher and his hands-on style of teaching really helps everyone learn about "how" to do woodworking! Students will make a small Keepsake Box from two contrasting woods on the table saw. The little box will have spline cut corners with contrasting wood splines to give it strength. The contrasting splines will give the box an extra sharp look. This is a really great looking little box and would make a wonderful gift for that someone special. Square Board Fundamentals
