Basic Lathe Skills - Instructional Class

Few tools are as essential to woodworking as the lathe. It is an indispensable tool for turning furniture parts, platters, bowls, and other one-of-a-kind pieces. David Dick, a well versed workshop turning expert will introduce you to the lathe and the fundamental techniques that can be accomplished with it. He then allows you to turn a bowl of your own to practice your newly acquired skills. What better way to get proficient on the lathe than to start "turning" your own bowls. Come join David and learn the basics!

Beginner's Lathe Class

Thursday, February 20, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

This is a hands on class that will introduce you to the basics of woodturning. The focus will be on how to safely use a lathe while having fun. You will learn how secure stock to the lathe as well as the basic parts of the lathe. Curtis will teach you how to use spindle gouges, scrapers, bowl gouges, parting tools, chucks and more. The "Rolling Arm" (Bent Lamination) Savannah Chair

The most important criterion for an indoor/outdoor chair is that it be comfortable for relaxing, reading and conversing in a study or garden setting. We decided to take a chair that is well known for comfort, relaxation and traditional adirondack design and get outside the box. Our creation is a version that is easier to get in and out of. To add some character we put some playful curves and "Rolled" the arms to increase the comfort. A similar version of this chair can be seen in the April issue of Fine Woodworking magazine appropriately called "Adirondack with a Twist." The back of our chair will be a bit taller and to make the chair easier to get out of the seat will also be higher. The wide curved arms make a fantastic visual statement as well as provide structural integrity. They are made from eight, 1/8" thick laminations and this adds the final touches to a uniquely elegant chair. Class Refund Policy: No Refunds for Cancellations/Reschedules within 7 days of Class date.
