Small Box Series: Heirloom Keepsake Box

This 2-day class will explore the world of small box making with power tools. Small boxes can be very simple to extremely elegant, from a simple recipe caddy to an intricate heirloom treasury. Once you learn the fundamental techniques, you can make just about any style in any size for any purpose. Students will focus on mitered and splined joinery in this class, and learn how to fit a decorative lid, which will set within the top of the box. Your instructor will provide a selection of beautiful woods from which you will choose for your in-class project. Species for each class will be subject to availability at the time of class. At the end of Day 2, each student will take home the beautiful box which they build in class! Time permitting, application of a finish may be discussed, but final finishing will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn about finishing in-depth should enroll in our Applied Finishing class, and bring their bare wood boxes to learn all about bare wood preparation and apply finish during that class. Wood Turning 101 Basics - Perfect Pear Project

In the Morning Session – Raleigh will begin with the A, B, C and D’s of Woodturning – Focusing on the Foundation of Woodturning. This will include lathe history, operations, Shop Safety, tool selection, sharpening, woodturning tool and wood selection. Raleigh will teach the students all about the different woodturning tools, the different styles and grinds, as well as how to choose, sharpen and how to use your woodturning tools. We will go over wood grain, density, moisture content, domestics vs. exotics, how to correctly prepare turning blanks, the various methods of mounting your work on the lathe, and much more. In the Afternoon Session – we will apply your morning skills to turn Perfect Pears!! Turning Perfect Pears is a repeatable woodturning project that you can repeat and wood turn in your home workshop! This class is a must to accelerate your skills for turning bowls, boxes, platters, and various woodturning projects. This is a hands-on class … so if you have woodturning tools, bring them so you can sharpen and use them in the class! All materials are included in the cost of tuition.
