CNC II - Making a Simple Sign

This is the second class offered in our CNC curriculum. In this class, students will learn how to make a simple sign. This lecture class utilizes a Next Wave CNC machine and VCarve Software. The instructor will go over work areas, lettering, toolpaths, choosing a bit, and sending it to the machine. Each student is responsible for supplying their own personal laptop loaded with VCarve Pro Trial. Download VCarve Pro Trial at vectric.com/free-trial/vcarve-pro. This is a lecture class. Students will not create any physical projects. The projects made in your VCarve program are saved and can be used to make the sign on your own.

Sharpening Carving Tools

Carving tools can be difficult to sharpen. Our instructor, has years of experience he would like to share with you. Bring no more than two dull carving tools and you will leave with them razor sharp and the knowledge to sharpen the rest of your tools as well! Each student is responsible for supplying their own one or two dull carving tools, a notebook, pencil, and safety glasses.

Scroll Saw Intarsia

Intarsia is a technique where beautiful pictures are created in wood using different species and grain patterns for contrast. The cutting is done on a scroll saw and then each individual piece is shaped and sanded to create depth. In this hands-on class, each student will be creating an Intarsia project out of maple and walnut. A scroll saw and scroll saw blades are provided. We recommend that you bring your own saw and Dremel rotary tool if you own them. Each student is responsible for supplying their own safety glasses and hearing protection.
